Tomatoes: On the land we produce small scale tomatoes that are sold to bring income. Some of it is in preparation of meals at the home. The children work so hard in the farm to ensure we achieve good harvest.
Kales: Sukumawiki is a type of vegetable widely consumed in the region. Here we also grow it for consumption at home and a few of it for comercial purposes. The vegetable sales at a good rate especially when its not available in the island..
Kienyeji: Kienyeji are locally consumed vegetables. They include Spider plant, .... These type of vegetable are indeginious hence most locals consume them for their medicinal nature. We plant a bit of it in the land for comercial purposes.
Poultry Farming: At Ebenezer Home we keep locally grown hens(Kienyeji). The hens are bassically for comercial and local consumption at the Home. The Plan is to increse the number of chicken in the farm and also to include different kinds of breeds of poultry.
Fishing has been the main source of both food and income for the people of Mfangano. The vast lake Victoria has been over-fished and currently left with nearly no wild fish at the moment. As part of our commitment to sustainable development, we have resolved to venture into fish farming so that we can raise food for the home children and sell surplus to the local community at affordable rates. This project is to use cages that are sunk in the lake unlike earth dug ponds which are expensive to maintain in terms of constant water pumping. Fish demand is very high in both local and global market. We intend to increase our cages from 1 at the momment to 10 cages with time so as to supply larger market. You can join us by donating a fish cage to increase the number of cages to a more productive and sustainable level.
AYEC: This is set to be conducted once every December to impact life skills to the youth. The main idea behind the anticipated 1 week long event is to challenge young people to take ownership of locally available resources such as the fresh water from Lake Victoria and produce food for themselves and the community. We target high school and university graduates that are jobless so we can impact skills of being self reliant. Based on pre-conducted research by Ebenezer leadership, there are a lot of resources that local youth can turn into sources of income sustainably.
These event is also an opportunity to identify various talent of the youth such as singing, innovative agriculture, art craft and pair them up with mentors to nature their talents. We also intend to set up a computer space within the home where basic computer skills will be impacted to the youth who attend this conference particularly those interested in computers. There will also be opportunity for the youth attending this conference to participate in beach clean-up day where they all go out one afternoon of the conference to a chosen beach and conduct free trash clean0up as a community service to the locals. Kindly contact us for more details if you are interested in sponsoring this conference.
Evangelism: Since the Kenyan education system has almost a month long holiday break from school 3 times a year (April, August and December), we organize our evangelism around this times to minister to young people. Our evangelism program takes place in two main areas (crusades and sports)
2.1 Crusades/beaches and shopping centre evangelism: We do conduct 5-7 days long gospel evangelism where we set out to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the the people of Mfangano Island with specific target to people living around small beaches all around the Island. Being a fishig village, the beaches are always crowded with fishermen and fishmongers in the late afternoons. These are the appropriate moments when we take the gospel to them. We have witnessed several souls return to the Lord and there is huge opportunity here since the Island has several beaches and the natives are very welcoming. This is a great opportunity to share the good news with the fishermen and have a feel of what their daily livelihood a long the shores of L. Victoria looks like.
2.2 Sports evangelism: We organize 5 days under 15 years old boys soccer tournaments from 26th -31st every December where invite all youth from Mfangano Island to participate in the event. We have witnessed a large number of young people attend these events. There are awards like soccer balls, soccer uniforms and boots that we give at the end of the event based on performance of individuals and teams. Besides the gifts that the kids enjoy, they also get opportunity to hear God´s word through invited guests who are given opportunity to share the gospel to the tournament attendees on a daily basis.
1. Be a guest: We are always looking for passionate preachers, singers or teachers of God's word to minister to kids during these events. We also welcome instrumentalists and music teachers to inspire the kids during these events. If you plan to attend any of these events do let us know 2-3 in advance to make arrangement for your stay while serving with us.
2. Sponsor girls tournament: At the momment we are only running boys soccer but we would love to run girls sports such as netball, volleyball and soccer too to minister to girl-child as well. Even though they do come to cheer the boys during sports, they currently feel left out due to our limited resources that cannot allow for hosting tournament for both boys and girl.
3. Donate: You can donate sports gears such as balls, trophies, uniforms, sock, footwears to be awarded to teams and individual participants based on performance during the tournament.
